Essential Steps for Dry Dock Preparation: A Superintendent's Checklist
Dry docking is one of the largest capital expenditures in a shipowner's budget. Effective preparation prior to yard arrival is the single most important factor in keeping costs under control and avoiding schedule overruns.
1. Developing a Detailed Repair Specification
A vague repair spec leads to expensive yard variations. Break down tasks into precise scopes:
- Exact steel quantities (in kg or sq.m) with plate locations and frame numbers.
- Pipe replacement meters with nominal diameters, pressure ratings, and pipe schedules.
- Electrical switchboard cleaning, motor rewinding numbers, and breaker servicing items.
2. Pre-Docking Ultrasonic Thickness (UT) Gauging
Execute hull thickness measurements 2 to 3 months prior to docking to order steel plates and pre-fabricate structural members in advance.
3. Pre-Ordering Long Lead Items
Secure specialized valves, sea chest strainers, shaft seal rings, and BWTS components early to prevent waiting on yard deliveries.
4. Coordinating Subcontractors & Riding Teams
Engage specialized mobile teams for specialized electrical, welding, and piping tasks to complement yard labor and control costs.
